What it is

SEO is the work of earning visibility in search engines like Google and Bing, and now in AI assistants like ChatGPT. For a local service business it means appearing when someone nearby searches for what you do. For a company in a regulated market it means being the source that both people and machines trust. At 4.digital the work covers technical foundations, content, authority and the reporting that proves it. Expect paid channels to move in weeks and organic search to compound over three to six months. We do not guarantee rankings, because nobody honestly can. We guarantee the work, the visibility of the work, and a strategy written down before anything starts.

Search engine optimisation is the craft of earning visibility. Understanding what your buyers type, and being genuinely the best answer to it. We start with what is true. Your market, your competitors, your numbers. The plan follows the evidence rather than a template, which is why no two engagements look the same once the audit is done.

Everything that ships follows one rule. A tactic that would embarrass you in front of a regulator does not ship. That rules out spinning content, hiding text and cutting corners you would not defend out loud. It is also what keeps rankings standing when the next update lands, because search engines have spent twenty years learning to detect shortcuts and they have not stopped.

The modern part is AI search. Assistants summarise the market before anyone sees a results page, and they cite a handful of sources. Those sources are chosen the same way rankings are. Clear claims, consistent facts, real authority. Good SEO now covers both surfaces at once, and the pages that win citations are rarely the ones written to game anything. They are the ones that answered the question properly.

There is an honest question underneath all of this. Whether SEO is worth it for you at all. If your buyers search for what you sell, and the decision is worth more than the work costs, the maths is straightforward. If they do not, or the sale is won through relationships and tenders alone, we will say so. Search marketing is not a universal answer and we would rather keep the clients it genuinely fits.

What we do

Technical foundation

Crawlability, speed and indexation fixed first, so nothing you publish is wasted. A site search engines cannot read is invisible however good its words are, and the fixes are rarely glamorous. Log files, crawl paths, internal links, structured data and the Core Web Vitals that decide whether your pages can compete at all.

Keyword and intent research

The searches that lead to revenue, mapped to the pages that should answer them. Not a spreadsheet of volume and difficulty alone. What the buyer means when they type it, how close to a decision they are, and which of your competitors currently owns the answer. The output is a page plan, not a keyword list.

On-page content and structure

Pages built around real questions, with headings and internal links that make sense. Each page answers one intent completely, earns its place in the navigation, and hands the reader somewhere sensible next. Written for the person searching first and the engine reading second, which is also how you earn citations from AI assistants.

Authority and digital PR

Coverage and links built on stories worth publishing. The links that carry real weight are the ones a journalist chose to publish. Original data, expert commentary and campaigns built from what your business genuinely knows, reported back with every placement named.

How we work

  • Audit

Four weeks of evidence gathering. What ranks, what is broken, what competitors actually do, and which numbers you can currently trust. We read your analytics before we trust them, crawl the site the way a search engine does, and interview the people who sell. The audit ends with the inconvenient findings, not just the easy ones.

  • Plan

One written strategy. The keywords worth pursuing, the pages that answer them, the technical work first, and the budget split. It names what we are deliberately not doing this year, because that list is usually longer and always more useful. You approve it before anything ships.

  • Build

The work itself. Technical fixes landed with your developers and reviewed before they ship, pages written and published on a steady rhythm, authority earned month by month. The same people who wrote the plan run it, so nothing is lost in the handover and nobody is surprised by the invoices.

  • Prove

Reporting you can read without a translator. Rankings and citations matter, but enquiries and revenue decide whether it worked. Every month carries a written verdict on what moved, what did not and what changes next. If a tactic stops earning its keep, it gets cut and you are told why.

What it costs

SEO retainers at 4.digital are scoped to the plan and fixed before any work starts. What moves the number is the size of your site, the strength of the competition, and how fast you need to move. A focused local campaign costs far less than a national programme against established incumbents, and we will tell you which one you actually need. If your budget cannot achieve what you want, we say so before you appoint us. What we will not do is quote a cheap retainer for work that cannot succeed, then spend six months explaining why nothing moved.

Who it is for

For local service businesses this is the difference between the searches that end in a phone call and the ones that end with a competitor. For regulated markets it is visibility built to survive a compliance review. We work with iGaming operators, fintechs, healthcare providers and law firms, and with the trades, clinics and professional practices that keep local economies moving. If your buyers search before they buy, this is for you. If a single tender decides your year, we should talk about something else.

Two kinds of business come to us: local service businesses and companies in regulated markets. See everything in Be found.

Questions we get asked

How long does SEO take?

Paid media can move in weeks. SEO compounds over three to six months, then keeps earning. Anyone promising page one next Tuesday is lying to you. The honest timeline depends on your starting position, your competition and how quickly the technical fixes land, and we will give you a specific forecast after the audit rather than a slogan before it.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. Nobody who is honest does. We guarantee the work, the reporting and the strategy you can inspect at any time. Search engines change their systems hundreds of times a year and no agency controls them. What we control is the quality and the visibility of the work, and that is what you can hold us to.

What is the difference between SEO and AI SEO?

SEO wins visibility on the results page. AI SEO wins citations inside the answer itself. The foundations are the same, clear content and real authority, but the second one also has to be quotable by machines and consistent about who you are. We do both together because the underlying work overlaps almost completely.

Do we need SEO if we already run PPC?

They compound. Paid search buys data and presence today. SEO lowers the cost of that presence over time, and covers the buyers who skip ads entirely. Most businesses should run both, in the order their budget allows. If you must choose, paid search is faster and SEO is cheaper over three years.

What does an SEO agency actually do each month?

Technical fixes, content published, authority earned, and reporting on what changed. The mix shifts over time. The first months are heavy on foundations, the later ones on compounding. You should always be able to see the work. If an agency cannot show you what it did this month, something is wrong.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

Often it is the best marketing spend available, because you reach people at the moment they want what you sell. The test is simple. Do your buyers search, and is a customer worth more than the work costs. If both answers are yes, the maths holds. If either is no, we would rather tell you now than take the retainer.

How do you measure SEO success?

Three levels, in order of importance. Enquiries and revenue from organic search. Visibility across the searches and assistants that matter. Then the leading indicators such as rankings, citations and coverage. We report all three, in plain language, with the losses visible alongside the wins.
