PPC

Paid media managed against profit, not clicks.

What it is

PPC is the discipline of running paid media so it makes money. It covers search ads, Shopping, paid social and display, and it governs how every pound is structured, bid, tracked and judged. The test of a good account is not clicks or impressions. It is profit per pound spent. At 4.digital the work starts with the account structure and the tracking, because campaigns cannot be improved against numbers nobody trusts. Expect traffic within days and useful conclusions within weeks. We do not guarantee a return, because no honest agency can. We guarantee the work, the visibility of it, and reporting that shows the losses alongside the wins. Paid search is the largest channel inside PPC and it has its own page. This one is about how the money is run.

Pay-per-click is the fastest way to buy a customer and the fastest way to waste a budget. The difference is not luck and it is not platform wizardry. It is discipline. An account structured around how you actually make money, tracking that tells the truth about what a lead became, and the willingness to switch off anything that spends without earning. Most accounts we inherit fail on at least two of those three. The structure is usually copied from a platform template, the tracking counts a form fill as a sale, and nobody has read a search term report since the account was built. Fix those three things and the same budget behaves like a different budget. That is the whole trick. It is harder than it sounds, because the platforms are perfectly happy with the arrangement as it stands. They get paid either way. Our job is to be the person who cares what the money actually did. That means asking an uncomfortable question in month one. If this account were funded from your own savings rather than a marketing budget, what would you switch off today. Most accounts have three or four obvious answers sitting in them, unasked, each costing a few hundred a month and never quite making it into a report anyone reads properly.

We manage the whole account as one system with one number that matters at the end of it, profit. Google Ads and Microsoft Ads, shopping and display where they earn their keep, and the landing pages that do the converting. Everything else is diagnostic. Impressions, clicks, click-through rate and impression share explain why something happened, but they are not the goal and we do not report them as though they were. You will know which half of your budget is working, and we will fix the other half in the open. When a campaign is losing money, that fact sits in the first line of the report rather than the last. It is your budget and your name on the invoice, so the reporting is written for you and not for an awards entry or a retainer renewal. The habit worth keeping is a monthly one. Sit down with the numbers, agree what changed, decide what changes next. We bring the analysis and the recommendation. You bring what a customer is actually worth. The plan gets sharper every time those two things meet. It also means you own the account, the data and the history if we ever part company. Being held hostage by an agency is a real thing in this industry and it is an easy thing to avoid.

The work is ongoing, because auctions move every week. Competitors change bids, seasons shift demand, a product line goes out of stock and the platform quietly changes how its automation behaves. We watch the account daily, write the decisions down, and report on what changed rather than what looked busy. Compliance is part of the rhythm in regulated markets, not an afterthought bolted on before launch. Every claim in an advert, every promise on a landing page and every figure in an approval pack gets checked before spend. The same honesty applies to the results. Some months the truth is that the market moved and the budget did its job anyway. We would rather tell you that than dress up a flat month as a strategy. Nobody who has run accounts for long believes the graph always goes up. What matters is that every dip has an explanation and every rise has a cause you could repeat on purpose. That is the standard we hold accounts to. Not a smooth graph but an explicable one. If we cannot explain a change in your cost per acquisition, that is ours to solve before the next invoice.

What we do

Account structure and build

Campaigns organised around how you actually make money, not around the ad platform defaults. Search, shopping, display and remarketing split by intent and margin, so budget follows the queries and products that earn it. New accounts get built properly. Inherited accounts get rebuilt only where the evidence justifies the disruption involved.

Bid and budget management

Daily decisions on where the next pound earns the most. Manual control where automation cannot be trusted with your margin, smart bidding where the data genuinely supports it, and budget moved between campaigns as performance shifts rather than left sitting on last quarter's plan. Nothing here runs on autopilot while calling itself management.

Conversion tracking

Revenue, leads and lead quality tracked end to end, so optimisation has something true to aim at. Calls, forms, transactions and offline outcomes wired into the platforms carefully, with consent and enhanced conversions handled properly. If a number cannot be verified, no decision of any size will be based on it.

Reporting in plain language

One dashboard anyone in the business can read, with the decisions written down beside the figures. What we changed, why we changed it and what happened next. Finance gets numbers that reconcile. Compliance gets the record it needs. You get the honest version, including the parts that did not work at all.

How we work

  • Audit

Two to four weeks of evidence gathering. What the account actually spends, which conversions are real, where the tracking lies, what competitors bid on and which numbers you can trust today. The findings come back in writing before we recommend anything.

  • Plan

One written strategy. The keywords and products worth paying for, the structure that keeps them apart, the bidding approach, the landing pages that need work and the budget split. You approve it first. If it needs more money than you have, we say so.

  • Build

The account work itself. Structure rebuilt, tracking implemented and tested, adverts written and approved, negatives seeded, budgets set. Compliance sign-off happens here, before spend, in markets where claims and wording are regulated. The people who wrote the plan run the build.

  • Prove

Reporting you can read in five minutes and interrogate for an hour. Profit and cost per acquisition carry the verdict. Clicks and impression share explain why. Monthly reviews decide what changes next, and every decision is written down so the account never goes dark.

What it costs

Two numbers sit side by side in PPC and confusing them causes most of the arguments. Your media budget is what you pay the platforms. The management fee is what you pay us to spend it well, and we quote that separately so nothing hides inside a percentage of spend. What moves the fee is the size of the account, the platforms and feeds involved, and how much tracking and landing page work the campaign needs to be trusted. What moves the media budget is the cost of clicks in your market and how much demand you want to capture. If the economics only work at a spend you cannot reach, we tell you before you appoint us.

Who it is for

For businesses that need demand this quarter rather than next year. Trades and clinics booking jobs, ecommerce brands with margin to defend, B2B teams whose sales cycle starts with a search. For regulated markets it means every advert, claim and landing page passing compliance before it spends a penny. We work with iGaming operators, fintechs, healthcare providers and law firms, where a misworded advert is a compliance problem rather than a typo. We also work with local service businesses competing against national chains on their own turf, and with multi-location brands that need each branch measured separately rather than pooled into one flattering number.

Two kinds of business come to us: local service businesses and companies in regulated markets. See everything in Be chosen.

Questions we get asked

What budgets do you work with?

From focused local budgets upward. The honest constraint is rarely the size of the number. It is whether the cost per click in your market leaves room for margin once a sale is made. If we do not think your budget can achieve what you want, we tell you before you appoint us rather than after you have signed. Budgets also change shape over time. A focused start that proves which campaigns earn, followed by a deliberate increase, beats a big opening month spread thinly across an account that has learned nothing yet. Once the account knows which campaigns earn, agreeing the second number becomes a much shorter conversation.

How fast will we see results?

Traffic within days of the adverts running, useful conclusions within weeks. The account gets better every month as data accumulates and the poor spend is cut away. Anyone promising a profitable account inside the first fortnight has either never run one or is not being straight with you. Useful here means figures a finance director would accept, not a spike in clicks on day two that turns out to be one competitor checking your adverts. The work compounds. The results do not arrive on a schedule, and they arrive once the account has earned them rather than before.

How much does PPC management cost?

It is scoped to the account rather than sold off a rate card. What moves the number is the number of platforms, the size of the product or keyword set, how much of the tracking is broken and whether landing pages need building first. We quote it in writing before you commit, and your media budget is always a separate line on the invoice. A clean account that needs managing costs less than one that needs rebuilding first, and we will tell you which one you have. Either way the quote is fixed before any work starts.

PPC or SEO, which should we do first?

If you need customers this month, paid media moves in weeks while SEO compounds over three to six months. Most businesses end up running both, with paid buying data and presence now and organic search lowering the cost of that presence over time. The order depends on your cash flow and your margins, not on our preference. There is a third option worth naming. Fixing the conversion rate first makes both channels cheaper afterwards, and it is the step most businesses skip because it is the least exciting thing to announce. It is also the step the other two stand on.

Do you guarantee a return on ad spend?

No. Anyone who does is either guessing or working from a sample size of one. We guarantee the tracking, the decisions and the reporting you can inspect whenever you like. What the market does with the traffic is a shared risk, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you a number we cannot stand behind. Anyone quoting a target return before seeing your margins, your conversion rate and your sales cycle is guessing in your favour, which is the most expensive kind of guessing there is. We would rather be held to work we control.

What is the difference between PPC and paid search?

PPC is the discipline that manages all paid media for profit. Paid search is one channel inside it, the ads on Google and Bing. Most businesses meet both at once. The campaigns live in paid search, and the management that keeps them profitable is PPC. On this site the PPC page covers how the money is run, and the paid search page covers winning the ads themselves.
