Search vs performance

Two labels agencies use interchangeably, and the difference that matters when you are choosing who to work with.

Two phrases follow the modern agency from room to room. Agencies use them freely, often in the same breath. They are not the same thing, and the difference between them will cost you money, or save it.

Performance marketing is a method

Consider what the words actually promise. Money in, outcomes out, tuned to a target and improved week by week. Paid search, paid social, affiliate work, conversion improvements. A sound discipline, well practised, and one worth having.

Now note the scope. The method applies to nearly every channel ever invented. That is a convenient property for an industry that would rather not be specific. An agency that leads with the word performance is describing its method. Useful knowledge. It is not the same as telling you where your customers are.

Search marketing is a place

Search names the territory. The surfaces where people actively look for what you sell. Google and Bing, the map on a phone, and now the assistants that answer before a single click. A narrower claim, and the better for it. Narrow claims are made by specialists, and the width of a claim repays attention before you sign anything.

The question worth asking

Ask the same question of both kinds of agency, and ask it plainly. What happens to my business when an AI assistant answers my customers’ questions without a click?

A performance agency will reach for attribution. A search agency should talk about becoming the source of the answer. One is a problem of measurement. The other is a problem of existence. These are not the same conversation, and the one you end up in will tell you what you are hiring.

When performance is the right word

If you buy traffic at scale, and the arithmetic of acquisition sits at the heart of the business, performance marketing is the honest label. Choose an agency that lives among dashboards and can defend every line of the maths.

When search is the right word

If your buyers come looking for you, especially in markets where trust is earned slowly and lost quickly, you want a partner who understands how demand is expressed and where it can be won. That is search work by any other name.

Our position, plainly

We call ourselves a search marketing agency because the name describes where the work is done. We measure it like performance marketers, because no one should ever have to take our word for anything.

The label matters less than the questions asked at the first meeting. Ask the assistant question, then listen for the level of the answer. And when you would rather see the work than hear the vocabulary, our PPC, paid search and SEO pages set it out in plain terms.

The choice, as ever, is yours.
