What AI search changed

Search results are no longer ten blue links. Here is what AI Overviews, ChatGPT and answer engines actually change, and what stays true.

For twenty years, being found meant one thing. A position on a results page. Ten blue links and the maths of where you sat in them.

That maths still matters. It is just not the whole game any more.

People ask assistants now, not search boxes. The answer arrives already written, with a handful of sources underneath. If the model reaches for your competitor instead of you, you are not ranked fourth. You are absent.

What actually changed

Three things.

The click is optional. When the answer is written for them, plenty of people never leave the page. Being cited is its own outcome now. Separate from being clicked.

The sources are fewer. A results page gives you ten chances. A summarised answer draws on a handful. The middle of the long list has stopped paying.

The reading is different. Models reward clarity, structure and sentences worth quoting. Pages built to be skimmed by humans and pages built to be quoted by machines are turning into the same pages.

What did not change

More than people admit.

Being the best answer still wins. Assistants are trying to be right. They reach for sources that are specific, current and consistent about who they are.

Technical foundations still gate everything. A page a crawler cannot read is a page a model cannot cite.

Trust still compounds. Being mentioned by the publications your market respects is still the strongest signal that you are worth quoting.

What we would do about it

Start with the questions your buyers actually ask. Ask them in the tools they actually use. Write down who gets cited. That audit takes an afternoon and it is usually uncomfortable.

Then fix the boring things. Make your claims clear and self-contained. Structure your answers so they survive summarisation. Keep your name, your people and your facts consistent everywhere they appear. Give the machines a clean way in.

None of this is a trick. It is the same discipline search has always rewarded, pointed at a new surface.

The honest part

Nobody can guarantee a citation. The same way nobody can guarantee a ranking. What you can do is become the obvious source. The clearest, most consistent, most checkable answer in your market.

That is buildable. It is also exactly what a careful buyer wants to find. If you want to see how the work runs in practice, our AI SEO and GEO service covers the answer engines, and SEO covers the ground underneath.
